What is speaking in tongues?

This is a little rudimentary. Speaking in tongues 101. These are things that we should know. Speaking in tongues is a language that you, the speaker, don’t understand. But it’s a language that the Lord gives you, and it’s a language of men – it can be a language that’s spoken on earth – or a language of angels – a language that the angels use to communicate with each other and to communicate with God.

1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

So speaking in tongues is a language given to you by the Lord, and it’s a language of men or angels. And speaking in tongues is a brand new thing that God did for the Church. You can read the Old Testament from Genesis 1 to Malachi 4 and you will not find anyone speaking in tongues. You can read the Four Gospels and you will not find anyone speaking in tongues. The first time anyone spoke in tongues was on the Day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two, at the birth of the Church, and tongues is something that God did for the Church.

And we know that when God moves in the Church, according to Ephesians chapter three it’s for His glory, and according to 1 Corinthians 2:7 it’s for our glory. So God moved in the Church powerfully for both His glory and for our glory. Amen.
